Quartz Looks Simple Until the Walls Are Not
Quartz is made to look even from slab to slab, so a bad seam or a gap against a crooked wall stands out more than it would in a busy natural stone.
In Tallahassee kitchens, Fernando lays out the seams and builds a wooden template against your real walls himself, so the finished top looks as even as the slab.

Is Quartz Right for You?
Where It Shines
- Engineered stone: one maker, MSI, says its quartz contains up to 93% natural quartz crystals.
- Never needs sealing, according to makers such as Cambria and MSI.
- Even color and pattern from slab to slab.
What to Know
- It is not heat-proof. Cambria says so plainly and recommends a hot pad or a solid trivet, and MSI advises trivets or hot pads too.
- Because it is made, it does not have the one-of-a-kind look of a natural slab.
Fernando will guide you through choosing and tell you honestly which one fits your home.

Questions We Hear
Does quartz need to be sealed?
No. Makers such as Cambria and MSI say their quartz never needs sealing.
Can I put a hot pan on quartz?
Use a trivet. Cambria says its quartz is not heat-proof and recommends a hot pad or a solid trivet, and MSI advises trivets or hot pads too.
Which countertop stone is the most durable?
It depends on what you mean by durable. For scratches, our own stone comparison sheet rates quartzite the hardest, 7 or more on the Mohs hardness scale, ahead of granite at 6 to 7. Granite has the highest published heat tolerance, about 480 degrees Fahrenheit (Natural Stone Institute). Quartz resists stains best because it is nonporous, but its resin makes it the most sensitive to heat. Marble is the softest and the most sensitive to acid. Our stone guide compares all four.
What is the difference between quartz and quartzite?
Quartz countertops are engineered from crushed quartz bound with resin. Quartzite is a natural stone, cut from the earth like granite, and every slab is different.
